This DOT gauge backing plate for heating equipment demonstrates our complex forming and drawing capabilities. The customer supplied blueprints and specifications for the part, which we met using precise CNC controls and quality assurance procedures including a dimensional/visual inspection.

The project called for 0.050” ±0.004” thick 3003 aluminum with a certified black anodized finish to enhance the corrosion resistance of the parts. The entire process was completed using a punch press with universal tooling, a drill press, and vibratory deburring machine.

The metal was stamped flat into a 5.968” disc, and then drawn at various points along the diameter of the disc. Once the 5.00” diameter x 0.793” high disc was formed, two holes were drilled, countersunk, and extruded, and the edges were de-burred to remove excess material, resulting in a 1.9 oz. final part.

Despite the complexity of this project, we were able to deliver 1,000 pieces to our customer in the Midwest in less than five weeks.
