This static discharger wick for the aviation industry required not only our innovative machining capabilities, but also our expertise in packaging. By achieving multiple forms with one press hit, we were able to deliver this high volume project on time and on budget.
We started with 0.020” thick 5052-0 aluminum alloy and used a punch press with universal tooling for all machining. We stamped the flat periphery of the part and then formed the main body, embossed the part in two locations, and used crimping to create a “U” shape.
Next we pierced two holes in the embossed locations. All parts were finished with a chemical film (MIL-C-5541 Class 3) to provide protection against corrosion without increasing the electrical resistance of the part.
The finished parts measured 2.875” in length x 0.790” in width x 0.1875” in height and weighed 0.1 oz. each. Our precise CNC controls and rigorous quality assurance procedures helped us manufacture each part with a tolerance of ±0.005” for all dimensions.
We packaged the parts in special partition containers, with 50 pieces per layer of packaging. This ensured that the surface finishing of the parts would not be damaged during transport to our client in the Southeastern US. We were able to deliver 15,000 of these parts to our client in just four weeks.
